The violet was a favorite of both the Romans and Greeks and was the national flower of Athens. The ancient writer Pliny wrote of the medicinal virtues of violet, prescribing it for gout and spleen disorders and added that a garland of violets worn about the head would banish headaches and dizziness. Since about 500 B.C., fresh violet leaves have been used as a poultice to treat skin cancer. In the 1930’s violet was widely used for breast and lung cancer and today may likely be a feature in alternative cancer therapies, especially after surgery to prevent the development of secondary tumors. Violet has been used to treat respiratory disorders, as a gargle in cough mixtures and as a diuretic. It is used as syrup for sore throats, dryness of the upper respiratory tract, chronic coughs and asthma with associated dryness. Violet can be used for healing internal ulcers. It is also helpful for tumors, boils, abscesses, pimples, swollen glands and malignant growths. It will give relief to severe headaches, by relieving pressure in the head.
