The popular and generic name is derived from the Latin, ‘scutella’ meaning “a small dish” in reference to the shape of the appendage to the flower, which resembles a cap in appearance, thus the name Scullcap. In earlier times, Scullcap was given the common name of “Mad Dogweed,” as it was considered to be a remedy for rabies. Scullcap calms the nervous system without narcotic properties, quiets the person and often brings about, natural sleep. Dr. Shook said, “Scullcap is a slow-working, but sure remedy for practically all nervous afflictions, but it must be taken regularly over a long period of time to be a permanent benefit.” Many herbalists will tell you that Scullcap is the best nervine as it acts through the cerebro-spinal centers and sympathetic nervous system to control most nervous irritation. It is an effective herb to ease problems associated with drug and alcohol withdrawal and drug use; it has detoxification properties that tend to lessen the severity of such withdrawal symptoms as delirium tremors. It is well noted for its abilities in easing spasmodic afflictions such as St. Vitus’s Dance, epilepsy, etc., acting to quiet the nerves.
