European Pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) and American Pennyroyal (Hedeoma pulegiodes) have similar properties. The European Pennyroyal is much more potent. Indians of North America taught the white settlers how to use the leaves of pennyroyal. It will repel insects by rubbing the leaves into the skin. When soaked in water and placed on the forehead it relieves itchy and watery eyes. Pennyroyal tea soothes the stomach and the herb can relieve colds, it’s spicy smell promotes perspiration in colds and flus. Pennyroyal has been used effectively to treat delayed menstruation; is also effective for gas, intestinal spasms, colic, pain and restlessness in children. It has been used to purify water and in times past, it was hung in sleeping areas to induce sleep and retard insects. The oil is also known to be a CNS depressant. It has been used for spasms and hysteria as it has a sedative, calming effect on the nerves. Pennyroyal is useful in dealing with lung problems, eases toothaches, is helpful in skin diseases and has shown good results in gout. CAUTION: DO NOT USE IF PREGNANT.
