(Silybum marianum) aka - Marian Thistle, Our Lady’s Thistle
Milk Thistle has been used in Europe as a well-known remedy for liver problems and as a digestive aid. It has been observed that, when Milk Thistle extract is given, an exciting reversal in symptoms of both acute and chronic liver problems, ranging from viral hepatitis to cirrhosis, occurs. The active ingredient in Milk Thistle increases the protein synthesis in liver cells, by increasing activity of ribosomal RNA. This ingredient, ‘silymarin,’ stimulates the liver to produce SOD, a potent free-radical scavenger, preventing the depletion of glutathione in the liver. Milk Thistle also protects the kidneys and is beneficial to those with psoriasis. It blocks allergic and inflammatory reactions. Milk Thistle aids immune response by increasing the production of T-lymphocytes and soluble proteins (interferon). It takes part in oxidation-reduction processes in the liver.
