Goldenseal / EchIinacea
For centuries people have combined Echinacea and Goldenseal to restore health and battle a variety of ailments. Exactly how these herbs work is still a bit of a mystery, but studies have proven their effectiveness for specific ailments and conditions. Both herbs are alteratives, meaning they help restore health and cleanse the blood of impurities.  According to The University of Maryland Medical Center, Echinacea contains active substances that enhance the immune system. It also relieves pain, reduces inflammation and offers hormonal, antiviral and antioxidant effects. Its uses include treatment of urinary tract infections, vaginal candida yeast infections, ear infections, athlete’s foot, hay fever and sinusitis. Echinacea has antiseptic properties, helps wounds heal faster. Goldenseal is used very successfully to ease and nourish mucous membranes, making it a viable choice or urinary tract infections, sore throats, vaginitis, diarrhea, eye infections and cancer sores. In addition to being an alterative, it is also antimicrobial and an astringent, thus soothing and protecting mucous membranes. Because it is a bitter, goldenseal benefits the digestive tract and may ease the effects of indigestion.  One of the biggest advantages Goldenseal has to offer is its ability to lower cholesterol. It contains an alkaloid called berberine, which assists in lowering LDL. The berberine also is effective in healing liver issues, such as fatty liver disease.  This combo is not to be taken long term.
