(Sambucus nigra) aka - American Elder
It is said that the Elder Flower tree provided the wood for Christ’s cross. The Shakers used it as a medicinal herb. Although Elderberry tea has been employed for generations as a folk remedy for such conditions as colds, coughs, and flu, only in recent years has science discovered that Elderberries contain ‘viburnic acid,’ a substance that induces perspiration, useful in cases of bronchitis and similar ailments. The Elder Flower is used for detoxifying the body tissues at a cellular level; it increases blood circulation and is known as a fever reducer, blood purifier and cell cleanser. The Elder Flower is an anti-inflammatory agent with anti-catarrhal action. As a sedative for relief of pain it can be used both internally and externally.
