Dong Quai Root Sliced
(Angelica sinensis)

Dong Quai has been used by the Chinese since the beginning of time and was recorded in the ‘Herbal of Shen Nung,’ who is widely regarded as the father of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Used throughout Asia for menstrual cramps, irregular periods, and other gynecological problems, it contains elements for nourishing the female glands and strengthens all internal organs and muscles. It is used for PMS, menopausal symptoms, cramps, backaches due to menstrual cramps and hot flashes. It has also been said to improve digestion and assimilation, strengthen the nervous system, aid in stroke recovery, purify the blood, dissolve blood clots, improve circulation, stimulate production of interferon, and boost the immune system. The coumarin compounds found in Dong Quai have been shown to stimulate white cell function and enhance immune system function. Dong Quai also contains Vitamin B12, folic acid, folinic acid, nicotinic acid, and biotin. Dong Quai is helpful after any injury or surgery to replenish your red blood cells and increase blood volume. It is included in nearly all Chinese herbal blood-building formulas.

Contradictions: Due to the estrogenic effects of Dong Quai, you should not use this herb during pregnancy, lactation or if you have a history of a hormone-driven disease, such as breast cancer. Dong quai may also increase the effects of other medications, especially anti-coagulant and anti-platelet drugs. Use cautiously in cases of abdominal distension or diarrhea due to Damp Obstruction.
