Cascara Sagrada
CASCARA SAGRADA (Rhamnus purshiana) aka - Sacred Bark, California Buckthorn

The name “sacred bark” dates back to the 17th century, when it was coined by Spanish and Mexican explorers intrigued by the American Indians use of the bark for a wide variety of medicinal purposes. Its most important use, however, was as a remedy for constipation or upset stomachs. It is an excellent remedy for chronic constipation. Its bark is rich in hormone-like oils that promote peristaltic action in the intestines. It is not considered to be habit-forming, as it cleanses and restores a natural tone to the colon. It improves the flow of secretions of the stomach, liver and pancreas. It is effective on the gall bladder ducts and helps the body rid itself of gallstones. It also increases the flow of bile.
